What Is It?

Part 1 – Google

What is Search Engine Optimization – SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an encompassing term used to define the optimization of websites for search engine visibility. Each search engine has it’s own “spidering” techniques, making SEO a bit tricky at times. Google’s seemingly most important SEO technique would have to be backlinks. Backlinks, or links IN to your site from other sites, can and will increase your “pagerank” with google. Pagerank is a system google uses to determine placement in a search based on specific search terms. Google determines pagerank from several different aspects, but as far as backlinks go, the better pagerank of the linking site, the better your site will benefit. Under debate, but still a valid and integral part of SEO in my opinion, would be the “keywords” meta tag. The “keywords” meta tag tells search engines which keywords should actually bring your page up, along with your content. Keywords should match as closely as possible with your page content. Once decided on, your keywords should be used in your content, but not too much. Keyword Density is a term used to define how often keywords are present in your page content. Proper keyword density is generally between 2% & 5%, anything over this would be considered “keyword stuffing” and could get your site removed from search engines. Along with content and the keywords meta tag, there is also the description meta and title tags. The description meta content is what viewers will see when your site is shown on the search engines. Descriptions meta tags should be essentially short, descriptive, and contain your keywords in a reader friendly format. The title tag is what your viewers will see at the very top of their browser window, above the address and toolbars. Title tags should be short, and should contain your essential keywords. This concludes part 1 of the Search Engine Optimization articles. Check back for more tips and tricks, as well as definitions for various SEO terms.
